Hurricane-Rated Garage Doors: What Florida Code Actually Requires

7 min read

In the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone covering Miami-Dade and Broward, garage doors are held to some of the strictest wind-borne debris standards in the country. Here's what the labels and paperwork actually mean when you're comparing quotes.

Wind load vs. impact rating

Wind load is about pressure — how much positive and negative force the door can take before it buckles. Impact rating is about debris — whether the door survives a large missile test without being penetrated. In the HVHZ you generally need both.

The paperwork that matters

Two documents carry weight with inspectors and insurers:

  • Miami-Dade NOA (Notice of Acceptance) — product-specific approval, the gold standard locally
  • Florida Product Approval (FL number) — statewide equivalent used outside the HVHZ
  • Permit and final inspection — required for replacement doors in most South Florida municipalities

Retrofit bracing vs. a rated door

Temporary vertical bracing kits can help an older door, but they must be installed before every storm and don't provide impact protection. A properly permitted rated door is the permanent answer and is what insurers want to see.

Insurance and wind mitigation credits

A rated, permitted garage door is a line item on the Florida wind mitigation inspection form. For many homeowners the premium credit meaningfully offsets the upgrade cost over a few years — bring your inspection report when you get quotes.

What we recommend by location

Coastal and barrier-island homes: impact-rated with corrosion-resistant hardware. Inland Broward and Palm Beach: rated to the local wind zone with reinforced struts. Either way, insist the installer pulls the permit — an unpermitted door can complicate a claim.

The bottom line
