Torsion vs. extension springs
Torsion springs mount on a shaft above the opening and are the standard on modern and hurricane-rated doors. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks and are common on older or lighter doors. Torsion systems cost more up front but last longer and fail more safely.
What changes the price
Four variables account for almost the entire spread between quotes:
- Spring count — most double doors use two; single doors often use one
- Cycle rating — 10,000-cycle springs are standard, 20,000+ cycle springs cost more and last roughly twice as long
- Door weight and insulation — heavier insulated and impact-rated doors need higher-gauge wire
- Access and condition — rusted shafts, seized bearings or drum damage add labor
Why we replace springs in pairs
Springs on the same door have the same age and cycle count. If one broke today, the other is statistically close behind. Replacing both in one visit avoids paying a second trip charge in a few months and keeps the door balanced, which protects the opener.
