Springs do the actual lifting — the opener just guides a balanced door. They're also the one component engineered to wear out. Knowing where yours are in their life saves you from finding out at 6 a.m. with a car trapped inside.
Cycles, not years
One cycle is one full open and one full close. Standard springs are rated around 10,000 cycles; high-cycle springs are available at 20,000, 30,000 and above. Divide the rating by your daily use to estimate lifespan.
- 2 cycles a day: roughly 13 years on a standard spring
- 4 cycles a day: roughly 7 years
- 6+ cycles a day: 4–5 years, common for families with two drivers
Why South Florida is harder on springs
Salt-laden air accelerates surface corrosion, and corrosion creates the micro-pitting where fatigue cracks start. Coated or galvanized springs resist it far better than bare steel, which is why we specify them on coastal installs in Hollywood, Hallandale, Fort Lauderdale and the beach communities.
Warning signs before a break
Springs usually tell you before they let go. Any of these means schedule service now rather than after the bang.
- Door feels heavy or jerky when opening
- Visible gaps, stretching, or rust flaking on the torsion spring
- Door drifts down instead of holding position when released halfway
- Opener strains, hesitates or trips its overload
- Loud bang from the garage with no obvious cause
Always replace in pairs
On a two-spring door, both springs have the same cycle history. Replacing one leaves you with a mismatched system and a second failure usually within months. Pairs also keep the door balanced, which protects the opener and the cables.
Why this is not a DIY repair
A torsion spring stores enough energy to break bones. Winding bars, correct wire size, inside diameter and length all have to be right, and the winding has to be measured, not guessed. This is the single most common serious injury in garage door work.
The bottom line
If your door is over seven years old on original springs and gets daily use, ask about high-cycle galvanized springs at the next service — the upgrade cost is small compared with a second replacement.
