Belt drive: the default for attached garages
A steel-reinforced rubber belt runs quiet and needs almost no maintenance. If a bedroom or living space sits above or beside the garage — extremely common in South Florida townhomes — this is the one to buy.
Chain drive: durable and budget friendly
Chain drives are louder but tough and inexpensive. They make good sense on detached garages, workshops and heavy doors where noise isn't a factor.
Wall-mount jackshaft: for headroom and heavy doors
A jackshaft opener mounts on the wall beside the torsion shaft instead of on the ceiling. It frees up overhead space for storage or a car lift, it's very quiet, and it pairs well with tall or heavy insulated hurricane-rated doors.
Horsepower and door weight
Match the motor to the door, not to the garage. Insulated and hurricane-rated doors are heavy, and undersizing the motor shortens its life.
- 1/2 HP: light single-car doors only
- 3/4 HP: the practical minimum for insulated two-car doors
- 1 HP or DC equivalent: heavy, tall, or hurricane-rated doors
Battery backup is not optional in Florida
