Before we begin sharing our step-by-step instructions and tips for how to install a garage door, we’d like to advise that while a garage door installation isn’t overly complicated, it does require some moderate do-it-yourself skills. If you’re just beginning to get comfortable with home projects such as these, we recommend giving the professionals (that’s us!) a call.
If you’ve decided that you want to install a garage door yourself, then there’s a couple of things you need to know before you begin. Firstly, it is not ever recommended that you attempt to install a garage door other than a sectional garage door on your own. Other types of garage doors are under high-tension and can be dangerous to work on. For these doors it is always recommended that you contact a professional garage door installation company, like Unique Garage Door Services of Hollywood, Florida. Secondly, you should always follow the garage door manufacturer’s instructions, as we can only provide you with a general guide.
Get the right measurements for your door. You’ll need to take measurements for width and height of the opening in order to figure out what size door you need. Then, you’ll have to measure for sideroom (the amount of wall space left on either side of the opening), headroom (the distance between the top of the door’s opening and the first obstacle, which could be a light fixture or the ceiling), and the backroom (the distance from the garage door opening to the back wall of the garage.
Attach any weatherstripping to the bottom edge of your first garage door panel. Make sure the panel is leveled and centered and hold the piece in place by tapping nails, at an angle, partially into each jamb. Be sure to attach any hinges or handles in this step as well.
Continue stacking the remaining garage door panels, following the same instructions for holding in place and attaching hinges listed in step two. Be sure to follow your instruction manual for any horizontal or curved pieces.
Install your rollers and vertical tracks, making sure to place the rollers for each section on the track. You may need some extra assistance for this step.
Install your horizontal tracks and connect to your vertical tracks. Assemble the springs according to what is suggested in your garage door manufacturer’s manual. Before attaching the door’s springs to the pulley system, double check that everything is tightened and that the tracks are properly aligned (do this by lifting the door at least a few feet up).
