Hurricane Garage Doors?
Yes, they exist. Hurricane Garage Doors are designed to withstand hurricane-force winds, debris, and rain, and are incredibly common with most South Florida homes. While some people might cop out and just deal with weatherproofing their garage door, there is a fine line of difference in the fine design of garage doors that are hurricane proof.
What’s the Difference Between Hurricane Garage Doors and Weather Proof
Ultimately, there are small design choices that are difficult to mass manufacture that would make a garage door hurricane proof instead of weatherproof.
Higher Wind Resistance – The design of the garage doors will often be beveled to accommodate the intense and multi-directional winds that would be pressing against a door. While the weatherproof doors will have these as well, they are often not completely integrated into all the door due to the design mockups.
Completely Sealed and Water Proof – While there are typically weather stripping and drip trays associated with weatherproof doors, the hurricane-proof doors bump this up to the next level. These often involve catches that will escort the water out to the sides our exterior of the building.
Increased Tensile Strength against Debris – Finally, there are strains and counterweights placed within the panels and woods that will better tolerate high impact objects and prevent them from tearing a hole as they would through a weaker structure and material.
